Does Baby Sign Language Really Work?

We did not have much success helping our daughter teach our new granddaughter sign language so I wanted to get some feedback from other parents on the subject before the next little one arrives. Our granddaughter learned a few signs, but she just was not very interested in signing. She started talking early so we surmise she was just very verbal child. I polled hundreds of parents across the country and the feedback was terrific. I believe will help other parents decide whether signing is right for them and their baby.
Thinking about sign language for baby
The parental poll on baby signing was overwhelmingly positive in support of signing.
Give your child a fish and today she eats. Teach your child how to fish and she will never be hungry. Got that Not hard. Once your child understands baby sign she will have learned a skill that will help her forever. Your newborn is crying and you don’t know what the matter is. That is because a baby can’t talk. Or can they They speak a lot.
Many parents shared their insights and specific challenges with their child. For example, some babies had physical challenges that hindered their vocal ability like a cleft pallet or a tracheal tube and the parents reported that signing was a lifesaver. Others began sign language as a bridge to talking so they could communicate more effectively with their baby earlier than they expected they would talk.
The mom whose son had a tracheal tube shared with me that her son was a very spirited little guy with strong emotions and she wholeheartedly believed that signing prevented huge emotional meltdowns by giving her son a way to communicate sooner.
Book/Website about baby sign language
I’d like to teach my son baby sign language.
Do any mommies have any good suggestions for websites/books about it
I taught my now 3 1/2 year old sign language (at around 2 he knew close to 50 signs). I just used the asl website and did the “adult” signs and he would adapt them to his ability to do a sign. (Bottle was a clap more was two fingers etc etc.)
We are also teaching our now 11 month old sign language and she knows more milk tired all done and eat. Those really are the best ones to start with.
There is a good book out there that has 350 signs and you can track your baby’s accomplishements of signing. You enter the date you first “show” them a sign and then you can also enter the date that they first “do” the sign. It’s called “The Baby Signing Book”.

Definitely teach your son it is a lot of fun helps develop better language skills for when they start speaking and decreases frustrations for both you and your baby (you don’t have to try and guess what baby wants and baby can get his wants/needs across to you)
Good luck!
